13 Highland Road: Information from Seller

The home was built over 1969-1970 by the Gunst family.

The local architects were Glave, Newman and Anderson. However an important design consultant to this project was the well-known landscape designer Thomas Church. Church is known as one who opened the door to the Modern movement in landscape architecture with what came to be known as the “California Style.” He consulted on the indoor-outdoor feel of 13 Highland, its alignment to the street for privacy and added his signature form, the octagon, in some of the living spaces and outdoor spaces. I have the signed landscape plans for this house that where archived at the University of California at Berkeley. There’s a great deal of information on Mr. Church on the Internet. His book, Gardens Are For People, will be given to the new buyers of the house.

In 2001, I became the second owner of the house. I undertook an extensive renovation to treat this mid-century modern as a historic renovation. I worked with architect Chris Fultz, from SMBW Architects, (403 Stockton St #200, Richmond, VA 23224 tel# 804-233-3761) and Radar and Starpoli Contractors.

The largest changes to the house were:

Enlarged and modernized the kitchen
Modernized the HVAC to geothermal technology.
Added energy recovery system to the HVAC which constantly brings fresh air into the house with added filtration system to clean allergens
Renovated all 6 bathrooms
Installed radiant heat in the flooring of the master and bedroom suite #2 baths
Built the tower and opened the entrance for better traffic flow
Changed every door and window on first floor and added the spanish cedar wood detailing
Added stone detailing to the inside and out
Removed old siding and sheathing and re-clad with stucco and copper detailing
