Windsor Farms: One of Richmond’s
finest communities, consisting primarily of larger brick
and slate residences in an ideal setting near the James River,
the Country Club of Virginia, Carytown, and the Downtown
Expressway.
Windsor Farms is the site of the former 500-acre “Agecroft
Hall” estate of Thomas C. Williams, Jr. In the
1920’s Mr. Williams initiated the development of the bulk
of the estate into a community designed to resemble an English
village. Early planning provided that the lots be of varying
sizes and shapes to offer unique home settings. Streets were
laid out in a circular rather than a block pattern and were given
romantic English names. Open spaces were mandated and parks
were set aside in various parts of the neighborhood for the use
of residents of the new community.
Windsor Farms is the site of two of Richmond’s architectural
treasures and historical attractions: the “Virginia House” and “Agecroft
Hall”. “Virginia House” was constructed in the
1920’s utilizing materials from the ancient Warwick
Priory in England. “Agecroft Hall” is a 15th
century English manor house. Each was purchased by
Richmonders traveling in England, disassembled and rebuilt in Richmond
in Windsor Farms in the early part of the twentieth century.
There are approximately 500 residences in Windsor Farms. Two-story
brick and slate Colonials and Cape Cods on meandering streets lined
with mature trees predominate, and a number of large, primarily
Georgian mansion-style residences may be found toward the rear
of the neighborhood near the James River. Several examples
of the designs of the revered architect William Lawrence Bottomley
may be found in this neighborhood as well.
Windsor Farms is particularly convenient, as it is within minutes
of the interstate and parkway system and boutique shopping in Carytown,
the Fan and Museum Districts, and the Shops at Libbie and Grove. Museums
and educational facilities, including the Virginia Museum of Fine
Art, the University of Richmond, and Virginia Commonwealth University
are readily accessible. Downtown Richmond is fewer than 10
minutes away via the Downtown Expressway.
Properties in Windsor Farms typically range from a low in the $500,000's to upwards of $5,000,000. Prices in the $600,000-$1,500,000 predominate. Demand for these properties has been particularly high in recent years and supplies low, and multiple offers on newly-listed properties are not uncommon.
